       Drilling  is  a  particularly  complicated  machining  process.  and  it  becomes  much  more complicated when the workpiece printed circuit boards (PCBs). PCB is composite materials with anisotropy. Even a small  defect in PCB may cause great losses. Both the drilling process and PCB structure  design.  have  been  researched  by  many  scholars.  But  the  investigations  into  the  drilling processes  of  PCB  are  not  systematic.

For instance. the downsizing of televisions. and telephones has made it possible to change. these from stationary to portable devices. Thus,  high-quality micro-machining  is  necessary for PCB. 

     The  basic  materials  forming  a  board  are  an  epoxy  glass  mix.  made  by  impregnating  rolls  of woven  glass  cloth  with  resin. and  sheets  of  copper  foil  which  are  used  to  make  the  electrical connections [1]. A typical board may have many alternate layers of epoxy glass and copper foil. manufactured  by  squeezing in  a  large hydraulic  press.  The board  will  not become  a  circuit until connections  . are  made  between  the  different  copper  layers.  and  when  the  discrete  electrical components are  soldered  or  welded in place. Thus,  through hole drilling is one of the fundamental processes required.  in the  manufacture to produce  an electrical connection  . between the circuits  on the board. 

    Drilling is a particularly complicated machining process. and it becomes much more complicated when the workpiece is PCB. PCB is composite  materials  with  anisotropy.       When high performance is not an essential PCB characteristic. a material like lightweight polyester is a good choice. There are at least two reasons to select lightweight polyester under these circumstances. as long as it’s used in conjunction with printed electronics (PE) technology.
 
       The benefits of PE with lightweight polyester include:
 
Lower cost. Lightweight polyester creates less waste, requires fewer processing steps. and reduces need for water treatment and filtration.
 
Versatility. Flexible printed circuits (FPCs) are available. but it’s expensive to achieve the level of “bendability” that makes them so attractive. PE with lightweight polyester retains the flexibility at a much lower price.
 
But, traditional PCBs are still the first choice for high-performance applications. and the decision about which materials to use in their creation. should based on the kind of board required. For example, will the board:
 
Handle frequencies between 500MHz and 2GHz
 
Accommodate high power and, thus, high temperatures
 
Be complex and “dense?
 
Manage frequencies at the microwave level and above
 
        The board’s application determines, to a large extent. which materials to use in substrates and laminates.
 
       There are three major types of materials used for fabrication of PCBs:
 
FR-4
This is the most used material in PCBs. It is a glass reinforced epoxy laminate sheet. The epoxy used is flame retardant and water resistant. It provides good strength to weight ratios. The tensile strength offered by this material is very high.
PTFE (Teflon)
PTFE is a kind of plastic material that does not provide any resistance. thus used for high speed, high frequency applications. PTFE is flexible, making it invaluable in applications with tight tolerances. It is also lightweight, allowing it to used across various industries. It is also flame resistant, exhibits high physical strength, provides temperature stability. and is versatile in application.
Metal
The traditional materials of copper, aluminum, iron, etc. are still used in PCBs. These materials allow the use of Surface Mount Technology (SMT). for the integration of components. They also provide mechanical durability. Thus, the product life of metal base PCBs is much longer.
The different materials used for the PCB design and fabrication. all offer a variety of advantages and disadvantages. The material chosen according to the application, the result needed. environmental factors, and any other constraints the PCB will face. You should choose the material of the PCB depending on the results that expected.
